SILENCE IN MOTION

Prompt:

“Write about a moment in the natural world that feels like a small miracle — something almost no one notices, but once you see it, you can’t unsee it.”

Reflection:

They are everywhere on my morning walk. But the fascinating thing about squirrels is that for all the commotion they make each day, their movements make almost no sound.

There could be a squirrel right beside you, and you wouldn’t know it. A squirrel could be doing backflips off a wall, yet its tiny feet have built-in soundproofing. At times, you can hear the rustle of leaves as they sail from branch to branch, but that is about it.

Once I noticed the contrast—the frantic darting paired with that utter silence—I could not unsee it. I suppose squirrels are a bit like rabbits in that sense. But if you see a group of sparrows, you’ll hear them without a doubt. Let two dogs meet on their walks, and the whole neighborhood will know from their barks.

Squirrels go about their day like silent monks—and I realized that is not a bad way to be.
