INDIAN CHICKEN TIKKA GYRO

Indian Gyro with Stuffed Paratha, Aloo Filling, and Chicken Tikka Masala

History & Lore

The gyro, a popular street food in Greece, has found a new identity in the vibrant world of Indian cuisine. This fusion creation combines the traditional Indian flatbread, paratha, with the bold flavors of chicken tikka masala and a savory aloo (potato) filling. Paratha, known for its flaky layers, is typically paired with a variety of curries, but here it takes on a new role as a wrap. The concept of filling paratha with potatoes is an homage to aloo paratha, a beloved north Indian dish. When paired with the richness of chicken tikka masala, this twist on the classic gyro becomes a culinary crossover—bringing together the heart of Indian street food with the global popularity of gyros.

For the Chicken Tikka Masala:

• 1 lb chicken breast (cut into cubes)

• 1/4 cup yogurt

• 1 tbsp lemon juice

• 2 tsp garam masala

• 1 tsp ground coriander

• 1/2 tsp turmeric powder

• 1/2 tsp red chili powder

• 1 medium onion (finely chopped)

• 1 can tomato puree

• 1/2 cup heavy cream

• Salt to taste

Toppings:

• Chopped onions

• Chopped cilantro

• Lemon wedges

• Cucumber slices

• Mint chutney or raita

Instructions

1. Prepare the Paratha:

• Mix the whole wheat flour and salt in a bowl. Add oil and mix it into the flour. Gradually add water and knead until the dough is soft and pliable. Cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.

• Roll the dough into small balls and flatten them into rounds. Cook on a hot, lightly greased griddle until golden brown on both sides. Set aside.

2. Prepare the Aloo Filling:

• Heat oil in a pan and add the mashed potatoes. Stir in turmeric, garam masala, cumin, red chili powder, and salt. Cook for a few minutes until well combined. Set aside to cool.

3. Prepare the Chicken Tikka Masala:

• Marinate the chicken in yogurt, lemon juice, garam masala, ground coriander, turmeric, red chili powder, and salt for at least 30 minutes.

• Heat oil in a pan and sauté chopped onions until soft. Add the marinated chicken and cook until browned. Stir in the tomato puree, heavy cream, and salt, then simmer for 15-20 minutes until the sauce thickens and the chicken is fully cooked.

4. Assemble the Gyro:

• Place a stuffed paratha on a flat surface and add a layer of aloo filling in the center. Spoon over a generous amount of chicken tikka masala and top with chopped onions, cilantro, and cucumber slices. Drizzle with mint chutney or raita and serve with a wedge of lemon.
