Chris Rock Story

July 25, 2017

I heard this story told by Louis C.K. many years ago and it had a huge impact on me.

(I can’t remember the exact details, and I’ll be telling it from memory, not everything will be right on, but the essence is true.)

Chris Rock was a fast rising star in his youth. He got on SNL and that experience turned out to be a big bust. He did not thrive well in that stage at all.

Then Chris disappeared from the scene altogether.

People assumed he was one of the thousands of aspiring comedians who come and go. Not everyone can make it. He was forgotten.

Something like ten years passed.

One evening, Louis and his fellow New York comedians heard that Chris Rock was in town and performing at a local comedy club. So they all went to go see this guy they had forgotten about all these years.

Chris came. He saw. He conquered. Totally destroyed the room. He killed. Decimated the place.

What Louis and his fellow comedians realized in that moment is that Chris had been touring around the country all those years, hitting up no name small town clubs, honing his craft. Grinding it out one inch at a time. Now he had become a master.

Meanwhile all the New York comedians were doing the same old thing all these years, doing their usual comedy sets, then drinking and partying.

In that moment Louis realized that he had to get his shit together and hone his craft, rather than waste it away doing the same old thing with the same old crowd.
