Glitches In The Matrix

June 22, 2017

A glitch is when something odd and abrupt happens during one of your routine activities. It is a signal that something is off and requires your attention.

One such glitch happened to me a bunch of years ago. I still remember it vividly.

This was during my “eat Subway because they’re healthy” days. I had been to this same store nearly every day, maybe 50 times or more.

Usually it was a smooth & brainless process.

I had my order memorized. My mouth would say the right things at the right time, and my hands would reach into my wallet and swipe the credit card, right after my head shook no when the upselling cashier tried to peddle 4 cookies and whatnot.

The whole time, my mind is thinking about other things.

This particular evening, as I got to the checkout process, their cash register went bonkers.

No matter what the lady did, it would not let me swipe the card.

It wasn’t a big commotion, just a tiny glitch that was abrupt enough for my mind to stop wandering and pay attention. Huh, this is odd, I thought.

She eventually got it fixed.

When I got home, I looked at the receipt for the first time ever, usually I toss it out without even a glance, and noticed that she had charged me more than double. I ordered a six inch with chips, no drink, and she charged me for a FOOTLONG meal (chips AND drink).

If I had paid attention to the glitch more closely, by looking at the receipt at the store, or even glancing at the machine before swiping, I could’ve avoided this.

Not a big deal.
Only the loss of a few extra dollars. And I stopped going to that Subway also. They were stingy with their olives anyways. (And they are not that healthy afterall).

Since then, I’ve become more aware of glitches and have probably been saved from bigger misfortunes.
