The Spirit is Willing (Creation of Adam)

October 4, 2016

Freshman year of college, I took a class in Art History.
The professor showed old paintings and explained perspective, light, color, and other technical details that I barely paid any attention to.

Fast forward a great many years.
Now I find myself staring at these types of pictures quite frequently.

The painting above is the famous Creation of Adam by Michelangelo. He painted it in the early 1500’s for the Sistine Chapel. The official story is that this painting depicts the creation of the first human, Adam from the book of Genesis.

The other nite, I had a different thought.
I don’t know if it’s influenced by anyone else (usually these types of things are) but as far as I can recollect, it seemed to pop into my mind as an original thought.

I don’t see this painting as the creation of Adam.
But rather, this painting reflects what is happening to you and I, at every moment of every day. Even right now, as you’re reading these words.

If you are spiritually inclined like me, you know that there’s a constant struggle inside. The struggle of being part animal, part spirit.

I want to love, but when a car cuts me off, I want to nuke em. I like to meditate, yet I also smolder with anger when someone is rude. I want to be noble & high-minded, yet I watch porn and take care of … business. The urge to procreate is strong! Nothing wrong with that but the animal impulses override my spirit too often.

I’m not there yet.
“The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

The Creator of all things, the Universe, the Divine, God, Angels and Spirits, whatever you want to call the mystical beings, are always trying their hardest to reach us. We’re astronauts stranded on planet Earth, the Spirit HQ is constantly trying to reach us on our headsets.

The muscular naked dude in the painting represents you and I.
We’re lethargic, we’re stuck in a lower dimension, we barely have any spiritual energy. Our posture is limp. We can barely raise our hand to make a connection with the spirit.

Yet the spirit is trying desperately to make a connection.

That’s the bad and good news.
The bad news is that life is hard.
No matter how rich or poor, your life will be hard. That’s just how the game is.

If you try to rely solely on yourself, other human astronauts, or material objects to satisfy, it’s gonna be a super rough ride. You can do it that way, all of this is optional, but that’s making it harder than it need be. Trust me, I’ve tried.

The god news.
At any given moment, especially when facing animalistic temptation, if we can become mindful, take a deep breath, and realize Spirit is trying its damnedest to reach out for support, it’ll be a much better ride.

That’s what the great Masters have always taught.
