Tend Your Garden

August 27, 2016

Everything that exists outside also exists inside.
This is an Eastern view of things.

All the criminals, that could’ve been us.
All the saints, that could’ve also been us.
Most of us though lie somewhere in between the two poles.

There is nothing that you and I are incapable of doing, under the right (or wrong) circumstances. It’s important to realize this truth. We may only be a plane crash away from Lord of the Flies.

Shoving our shadow side deep into the closet will not help.
The more we deny our dark impulses, the more it wants to show itself. Whatever we resist persists.

It’s a pressure cooker inside, we need to release the valve at some point or it’s gonna explode. That could be through exercise, martial arts, therapy, blogging honestly, confessional, or even beating up virtual hookers in Grand Theft Auto. Different people, different methods. Some very gentle men and women, lookin prim and proper in public, have taken virtual baseball bats to virtual streetwalkers in private, trust me.

I was thinking of the Christian concept of the 7 deadly sins.
Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy & Pride.
We all have em. There’s no way around it.

The degree to which differs though.
Each human is unique.

Assuming a 1-100 scale for each of the 7 sins, that leaves about 100,000,000,000,000 different variations of how they can manifest within us. (That’s 100 trillion.) According to google, only about 108 billion humans have ever been born thus far. That leaves plenty more variations to be experienced in the future.

There’s also the flip side. The light side.
The 7 virtues.
Chastity, Temperance, Charity, Diligence, Patience, Kindness, & Humility.

The good news is that if your Gluttony meter is at 60%, as bad as that seems, it also means that your Temperance meter (the flip side) is at 40%.

Even better news is that as conscious beings, we can cultivate our own garden inside.

You can choose daily which plants to water & fertilize, and which weeds to pluck.
When you resist that bucket of fried diarrhea from the Colonel today, your Temperance meter may go up to 41%. That means Gluttony simultaneously went down to 59%.

It’s a daily thing.
When I go too many days without conscious cultivation, the sins increase automatically while my virtue meter goes down. There is no rest for the weary.

With that said, can I admit openly that this is the song that I played on loop while writing these words?? Yin and yang, dude!
