I Ching Divination Method (& The Beatles)

July 18, 2016

I’ve been obsessed with divination methods lately.
Or call it a lateral thinking exercise if you must remove the mystical out of it. I don’t know why you’d want to do that, but just giving you options, ok?

I’m excited to find out that my favorite Beatles song was inspired by the I Ching.

George Harrison on his hit song:

I wrote “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” at my mother’s house in Warrington … I was thinking about the Chinese I Ching, ‘The Book of Changes” … The Eastern concept is that whatever happens is all meant to be, and that there’s no such thing as coincidence – every little item that’s going down has a purpose.

“While My Guitar Gently Weeps” was a simple study based on that theory. I decided to write a song based on the first thing I saw upon opening any book – as it would be relative to that moment, at that time. I picked up a book at random, opened it, saw “gently weeps”, then laid the book down again and started the song.

The Method.
Instead of opening a book at random, you can use the official I Ching hexagrams. Using coins, sticks, or a website like I do.

Eclectic Energies has a virtual coin flipper.
Click 6 times to flip. This reveals two hexagrams.

And then a cryptic message will appear, which will be useful for you at the moment. Meaning, no matter what the message, it is constructed in a way to be helpful to the person receiving it.

The Current Mood
Make what you will of the following message, meant for this moment.

39. Trouble
Line 2:
The king’s official causes trouble.
The trouble is not his personal intention.

Being given trouble by someone. This is not on purpose.

Line 4:
Going through trouble,
arriving at continuation.

Going through this trouble makes it possible to go on.

Hexagram is changing to:

28. Too Much
Too much.
The roof-beam is sagging.
It is beneficial to have a goal to move to.
Progressing.

Something is too much for this situation. One better make a plan to do something about it, and make it more robust. There is progress.
