Les Brown is the King of Motivation

April 18, 2016

Backstory:
There was a time in my life when I listened to motivational audio on loop.
All day, every day.

Jim Rohn, Zig Ziglar, Denis Waitley, Tony Robbins. And my favorite, Les Brown.

It’s been a few years since I’ve been down that road.

So today, I was kinda in an irritable mood.
Low energy, low mood, annoyance, brain on fritz. This happens quite frequently, I think mainly because of adrenal fatigue. This is a pattern I’m familiar with but that doesn’t make it any easier to go through it.

I only have one goal for the day.
To lift weights.
I haven’t missed a session in 2 months and I don’t plan to.

So I stumbled out of my room in the evening, like I was hungover.
Used what ounce of energy I had to electrically grind some organic coffee beans. Turned on the kettle. Just that took a lot out of me.

Didn’t have any juice left in my body to use an aeropress, so settled for the french press instead.

Aeropress requires fiddling with the filter and doing some pushing action. It really takes no effort at all normally but today was not one of those days.

With the french press, I can dump the beans and hot water in. Wait a few minutes to gather my motivation, and lightly press down.

Holding a bottle of water, the fully-loaded french press, and a ceramic glass, I head down to the basement. Iron paradise and workout angels await.

I turn on the lights and slump down on the couch. Exhausted.

While waiting for the coffee to finish brewing, the name Les Brown bounced into my brain. Like a lottery ball bouncing up from somewhere in the dark recesses of my subconscious.

I swipe my phone on, jack the headphones in.
Type LES BROWN into youtube and press play on the first video. I don’t have the energy or motivation to look at different results. Whatever comes up will have to do.

My brain bounced up another old memory in the split second before the video loads. “They say motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing, that’s why we recommend it daily.” – Zig Ziglar.

Made me smile.

A second later, my ears are full of sound.
That familiar uplifting, motivated, cheerful voice filled my head.
It’s been a while, Les.

There I sat on the couch, engrossed, like the good old days. A few minutes of Les lit my pilot light. By now, the coffee stopped being scalding hot. Les & coffee were the perfect one two punch I needed today.

I listened to the whole audio.
Drank a couple glasses of fresh brewed coffee.
My body tingled from the caffeine and positive talk.

“YOU GOTTA BE HUNGRY”

Then I fiddled with my phone and turned on some classic rock.
And man-handled my business. Set new personal records. The force was strong.

Finished off with a fir sauna and cold shower.
Big-ass protein, clean carb, veggie meal afterwards.

Today was a success.
Thank you Les, you’re the best.
