Use a Compass, Fuck GPS

June 3, 2015

A gps tells you the fastest most direct way to get somewhere.

If you get off route, the robot lady will tell you to get back on course.
“Please take the next available u-turn.”
“Please take the next available u-turn.”
“Please take the next available u-turn.”

A compass points in the general direction of where you want to go.
It won’t tell you the exact streets. And it doesn’t demand anything of you. You can go as eastbound & down as you want. When you’re ready to head back north, it will point the way. You get to choose your route.

We respect & admire folks who use their inner compass to blaze a new trail. Someone who follows step by step “how to do something for dummies” are just copycats.

It’s the difference between the original Mona Lisa vs a replica.

Louis CK struggled for over 20 years.
Doing shit gigs.
Lived in a room full of garbage. Wrote to-do lists on the wall, because he didn’t feel like using paper. Once broke a piece of glass in his room. Instead of sweeping it up, just walked around it forever.

He didn’t have a step-by-step map to become a successful comedian.
But he did have a compass.
His north star was George Carlin.
It took Louis a long ass time to make it.
And the scenic route gave him plenty of funny stories to tell us.

“If you tell me who your heroes are, I’ll tell you how you’re gonna turn out. It’s really important in life to have the right heroes. I’ve been very lucky in that I’ve probably had a dozen or so major heroes. And none of them have ever let me down. You want to hang around with people that are better than you are. You will move in the direction of the crowd that you associate with.”Warren Buffett

The map has been replaced by the compass – Seth Godin
My post was inspired after listening to dozens of Seth interviews. All of this compass vs map is his idea, so is original painting vs replicas. I recommend all his talks & books.

Louis CK “Chewed Up” dvd interview
I’ve watched this a bunch of times. He explains a lot of cool things about his life. The stories I mentioned above were I think from his WTF interview with Marc Maron.

“When experts are wrong, it’s often because they’re experts on an earlier version of the world.”Paul Graham
I was wondering why experts are wrong a lot or even sometimes. This post explains it well. Experts have well-defined, strict internal maps. But the world keeps changing fast. People with strict maps lose. It’s better to have an internal compass.
