This is the fun part

Something Louis CK said has stuck in my head.
In Comedians in Cars with Jerry Seinfeld, Louis tells a story of getting his two girls ready for school. It’s cold, snowing, everything is a hassle, kids are running late, etc. Chaos.

And as he was walking them to school, Louis had a realization. That one day, he will miss all of this. Gratitude during chaos.

Kevin Kelly, Wired Magazine founder, also said something interesting.

He is the guy who wrote the famous “1,000 True Fans” post. And is an overall smart, wise guy.

Kevin started keeping a daily calculator that tells him how many days he has left to live.

And it helped him put everything into perspective. If you only have 8500 days left on earth, would you waste a day doing something useless?

I’m sure you’ve heard Steve Jobs talk about this as well.
If you live each day as if it were your last, one day you will surely be right.

What advice would you tell your younger self?

I’ve heard many famous people asked this question.

And the answers usually center around:
“I wish I would’ve had more fun.”
“I wish I didn’t take it all so seriously.”
“I would’ve told myself to slow down and enjoy the ride.”

One way I try to do that (if I remember) is to tell myself that this is the fun part.

One day I will miss having the flu. One day I will miss eating chocolate. One day I will miss having a headache. One day I will miss being bored. One day I will miss driving thru rush hour traffic. One day I will miss drinking coffee. One day I will miss being single. One day I will miss washing dishes. One day I will miss seeing snow storms. One day I will miss all the struggle.

This moment is the fun part.

“Think of life as a terminal illness, because, if you do, you will live it with joy and passion, as it ought to be lived.”
– Anna Quindlen
