All The Supplements I Use

UPDATE: 7.12.12 – Nowadays, I only use gabriel method 50b probiotics & 3g of nordic naturals cod liver oil

1. Myoplex Carb Control Shakes (25g Protein, 3g Net Carbs, 1g Sugar)

Why I use it:

I’m following the slow carb diet (as described in the Four Hour Body by Tim Ferriss) and learned that I need high protein meals, especially up to 30g protein within 30 mins of waking up.

I don’t cook – so it’s just easier to run to the fridge as soon as I wake up and drink one of these. This also serves as a good meal replacement or snack later in the day.

I had also read Body For Life by Bill Phillips and how he created EAS and the high quality Myoplex shakes.

Tim Ferriss also mentions his dad drinking Myoplex shakes as part of his breakfast.

PS: I used to drink the Original Myoplex shakes (42g Protein, 13g Net Carbs, 2g Sugar) for a few months due to high protein content. I was not losing much weight, so decided to switch to the low carb version.

Where to buy:

Go to the EAS Abbottstore.comuse a coupon code to get a discount. I checked Amazon.com (Sept 2011) and couldn’t find a seller offering a good price nor prime shipping.

Update: The original Myoplex shakes taste amazing. The carb control one has less flavor (which is not a big deal) and every pouch has had clumps in the bottom. I bought two different cartons from two different places (amazon and directly from eas) and both have the same problem.

It’s like drinking curdled milk when you get towards the end – not appetizing. Not sure if I’ll continue to buy this version.

2. Cod Liver Oil by Nordic Naturals (3 caps a day)

Why I use it:

I’ve heard about Omega-3’s for the longest time but it didn’t dawn on me til this past week (Sep 2011). It’s mentioned in the Four Hour Body, most natural health books/blogs, etc.

We need Omega 3’s, vitamins A & D. The product also needs to not contain any environmental toxins/heavy metals (mercury in fish etc) and needs to be molecularly distilled.

I’m sure there are a lot of fish oils and cod liver oils out there – the one by Nordic Naturals seemed to be one of the best according to my research.

Where to buy:

Amazon.com seems to have the best price (180 caps – 1 month supply @ 3 caps/day) and prime shipping.

3. Alpha Brain by Onnit Labs (2-5 caps a day)

Why I use it:

I have used it for a month or so and I completely agree with everything they said in the video. It makes me feel alert, sharp, fresh minded – I can focus for long periods of time and can remember my dreams much more vividly. I’ve also experienced a few lucid dreams as well. It’s like a vitamin for the brain. Sounds crazy and hypey but it works.

Where to buy:

Here (use code “Rogan” for 10% off)

4. Psyllium by Organic India (6g fiber/serving – 3 or more servings/day)

Why I use it:

I take this sporadically. Ideally, I would try to get 30g of fiber a day – either thru diet or thru Psyllium.

I originally learned about Psyllium because it is a main ingredient in the brand name fiber supplements (ie: Metamucil) – but all of those have added sugar and other unhealthy preservatives.

Where to buy:

Here

5. Athletic Greens (2 servings/day)

Why I use it:

Tim Ferriss calls this his nutritional insurance in the Four Hour Body.

It’s a green drink that contains tons of nutrients (76 ingredients – equivalent to 12 servings of fruits/veg).

The main reason I take it is to get the good gut bacteria. This drink includes probiotics (good bacteria) and prebiotics (food for the bacteria).

Good bacteria is supposed to aid in fat loss and digestion.

Remember to put in fridge after opening – it has live organisms in it!

Where to buy:

6. Ice Packs

Why I use it:

Tim Ferriss mentions cold therapy which helps burn fat. He says that using cold packs on the upper back/neck and upper chest helps to burn the right type of fat.

I used it for a long time but didn’t really notice any difference.

Where to buy:

Here (Amazon prime). You can probably also make your ice packs using ice cubes wrapped in a plastic bag or something like that.

7. Saigon Cinnamon (max 1.5 tsp)

Why I use it:

Tim Ferriss mentions that this particular type of cinnamon reduces glucose spikes. It is especially recommended during my cheat day – before eating super junky carb meals.

I sprinkle a little bit on my coffee.

Where to buy:

Here (Amazon – prime)

8. Optimen Multivitamin (3 tabs/day)

Why I use it:

I used to take Centrum Performance – for no real reason other than it was a brand name I recognized.

When I ran out – I decided to look at Amazon best sellers for vitamins and noticed Optimen Multivitamin by Optimum Nutrition.

It contains more than double the percentage of vitamins/minerals of Centrum – but then with Centrum I only took 1 tab while Optimen daily dose is 3 tabs.

Where to buy:

Here (Amazon prime)

9. Beta Carotene by Now Foods (25,000 IU)

Why I use it:

My Spectracell results recommended that I take this amount daily.

Where to buy:

Here

10. Magnesium Citrate by Now Foods (200mg)

Why I use it:

Same reason as above. I need 300mg total daily – I get 100mg from Optimen Multivitamin.

Where to buy:

11. NAC by Now Foods (600mg)

Why I use it:

Same as above.

Where to buy:

12. COQ10 by Now Foods (30mg)

Why I use it:

Same as above.

Where to buy:

13. Alpha Lipoic Acid (300mg)

Why I use it:

Same as above.

14. Yerba Mate Tea – Chocolate (2-4x a day)

Why I use it:

Tim Ferriss mentions Yerba Mate tea as a great tool to increase bowel movements (handy during carb-laden cheat days) as well as a tool for increasing mental clarity. He ranks it as the #1 best beverage in the world.

I did my own research and Yerba Mate seems to have tons of antioxidants and may have anti-obesity benefits.

Where to buy:

Tim recommends Cruz De Malta brand – it’s available on amazon but doesn’t have prime shipping and it’s in loose tea form.

So I buy Guayaki Brand tea bags.

I’ ve tried the regular version as well as one with chocolate – and I prefer the latter. Apparently, the combo of yerba mate with chocolate is supposed to release additional benefits.

3. This video by Joe Rogan shows how he makes his green shake (veg + fruit) that he drinks every morning as well as all the supplements he takes. It includes Kale, Cucumber, Celery, Ginger & Pear.

He learned about it from Kevin James (they made Zookeeper together) who started juicing and lost 80+ lbs.

I’m about to start a regimen of juicing in the morning as well and found the video super helpful.
